How to Write a Dating Bio That Actually Attracts the Right People

A dating bio has maybe 10 seconds of someone's attention — if you're lucky. In that time, it needs to do something specific: make the right person want to match with you and give them something to say. Most bios fail not because they're bad writing, but because they're generic — you could paste them onto anyone's profile and they'd still work, which means they effectively belong to no one.

Here's how to write a bio that's actually yours.

Step 1: Know what your bio is for

Before you write anything, be clear about what you want your bio to do. Is it to attract a specific type of person? To filter out people who aren't serious? To show a side of your personality that your photos don't capture? To make it easy to start a conversation?

Most effective bios do all of these — but knowing which matters most to you helps you make choices about what to include and what to cut.

Step 2: Start with what's genuinely specific about you

The question to ask: what is true about you that wouldn't be true about most people? Not 'I love food' (everyone does) but 'I'm working through every Ottolenghi cookbook in order and I'm on page 347.' Not 'I enjoy travel' but 'I've been to 14 countries and still haven't made it to the place I've had on my list for five years.'

Specificity creates personality. Generic statements, even accurate ones, create forgettable profiles. Write down 10 specific things about yourself — quirks, interests, habits, opinions — and pick the 2-3 that feel most you.

Step 3: Find your voice

The best bios sound like a real person wrote them. Read your draft out loud. Does it sound like you? Or does it sound like you were trying to seem impressive? If the latter, rewrite it in the language you'd use with a friend.

A useful exercise: text a close friend and describe yourself in a few sentences. Whatever you write there — relaxed, honest, no pressure — is closer to the right tone for a bio than whatever you'll write when trying to 'craft' something.

Step 4: Give them something to respond to

A bio that ends without a hook makes the first message harder to write. The best bios end with something that invites a response: a question, a stated preference they can agree or disagree with, a specific detail that someone can follow up on.

Examples: 'Still looking for someone who can recommend a book that's actually as good as they say it is.' 'Will fight you about the best pizza in [city].' 'Tell me something that's not obvious from your photos.' These aren't demands — they're invitations.

Step 5: Cut what isn't earning its place

Read your bio and ask of every sentence: is this specific to me? Does it show personality? Does it move toward a connection? If any sentence is just taking up space — cut it. A tighter bio almost always performs better than a longer one.
